How Prototype 1 works
For any place on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge from 20°N to 30.5°N: what public data say is known there, how and when it was observed, how finely, what is only predicted, and what is missing.
- Pick a layer.
- Select a hexagon. Zoom in for finer cells, about 0.7 km² each.
- Read what we know, what remains uncertain, and what could be observed next.
- Press any Source button to see the records and licences behind a value.
- Measured
- Depth from a direct measurement, such as multibeam or single-beam sonar (GEBCO type codes 10–17).
- Interpolated
- Depth estimated between measurements (codes 41–44).
- Predicted
- Depth predicted from satellite gravity, not measured (codes 40 and 45).
- Survey record
- A ship survey whose footprint overlaps the hexagon. No record does not mean no survey.
- Gap
- Something the data cannot tell you here, in one of seven fixed sentences.
- Possible next observation
- One that could address a named gap. Unranked and not validated.

Since Prototype 0
Prototype 0 asked if measured-depth coverage alone could point to useful gaps. Here it could not: the ridge axis is almost all mapped. Prototype 1 asks what is known about a place, and how far predicted depth can be trusted. See every version in the prototype history.
