Trackline test
Prototype 2, methodology p2-0.1, 2026-10-11. Written before it ran (docs/03-science/prototype-2-planning.md) and published whatever it showed. Generated by python -m aethon_p2 build.
Question. How much does adding NCEI's older trackline record change what Aethon says is unsurveyed?
Decision (rule fixed before the run: more than 5 percentage points in either region). Catalogue coverage shapes what Aethon calls unsurveyed: every "no survey record" sentence now says so. The sentence added: "Which records are read matters: in Aethon's trackline test, one older catalogue found survey records for 40% of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge hexagons that had none."
| Region | Hexagons | No survey record, before | After adding the trackline record | Change | Covered only by the trackline record |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 20°N to 30.5°N | 25,297 | 8,628 (34.1%) | 5,192 (20.5%) | 13.6 points | 3,436 |
| New Jersey and Delaware shelf and slope | 2,470 | 5 (0.2%) | 5 (0.2%) | 0.0 points | 0 |

What this does and does not show
- A ship track crossing a hexagon means a ship recorded depth along that line, not that the hexagon was mapped. A survey extent or footprint outlines where a survey worked, not how densely.
- The test counts records in catalogues. It says how much "no survey record" depends on which catalogues are read; it does not measure how much of the seafloor was measured.
