We are trying to understand our own planet first.
Aethon explores Earth's least understood environments to answer fundamental questions about the planet, build technology that extends what people can reach, and put what we find to use. We start with the ocean, because it is the largest of those environments and the nearest.
The problem is not that the ocean is unreachable.
It is that we cannot say, with any precision, which parts of it are actually understood. Explorers have seen less than 0.001% of the deep ocean seafloor (NOAA Ocean Exploration, April 2026) — but that single number hides enormous variation. Some areas have been surveyed repeatedly. Some carry decades-old measurements. Some have values that were never measured at all, only inferred from somewhere else and quietly rendered as fact.
Ship time is scarce and expensive. Choosing the wrong site wastes a season. So the first useful thing to build is not a vehicle. It is an honest map of what we know.

Evidence before conclusions
The ocean produces strange observations. We treat them as questions and publish what survives scrutiny — including the ones that turn out to have ordinary explanations.
Integrate before we build
Aethon does not own exploration hardware. We charter, partner and integrate first, and build proprietary systems only where ownership creates a real advantage.
Say what we don't know
Every figure on this site carries a source. Every gap in the map is shown as a gap. Nothing is filled in with a plausible-looking guess.

Our story
Built by a solo founder and his dog.
Aethon LLC is a Pennsylvania company founded by David Fischbarg. Right now it is one person, which is worth saying plainly rather than writing copy that implies a building full of staff.
That is also the argument for the order of the work. A small team cannot charter a research vessel on a hunch. It can build the thing that makes every hunch testable first — and that turns out to be the more useful artefact anyway.
The reason is simpler than the roadmap makes it look. Exploration is one of the few things people still do together. There is no shortage of conflict, or of injustice, or of noise; there is a shortage of hard work that is genuinely shared, and that leaves something behind for everyone.
The ocean is the nearest of those problems. It is the largest unexplored environment on the planet, it belongs to no one in particular, and almost everything we would need to understand about living here runs through it. It is a step, not the destination — but it is the step that is actually in front of us.
Giving back is part of the plan rather than a footnote to it. Exploration produces things worth sharing — data, imagery, findings, methods — and the intention is to put those into the open, to support the people and institutions already doing this work, and to fund restoration and protection as the company can actually afford to. That will take more than one form, and each one will be described here when it is real rather than promised in advance.
