The ocean still holds huge unknowns. Aethon treats anything strange as a question and checks it with repeat observations, more than one sensor, and people who did not collect the data.
Five states. Only evidence moves a finding between them.
A better story never upgrades an observation. “Unresolved” is often the honest answer.
Verified discovery
Seen more than once or confirmed independently, and reviewed by people who did not collect the data.
Known feature
Already in the scientific record, credited to whoever found it.
Under investigation
Seen once, or by one instrument. Interesting, and not enough yet.
Explained
Looked strange, turned out to be ordinary. These stay published: the explanation is a result.
Unresolved
Checked against ordinary explanations and still not accounted for. It stays an open question.
What every entry has to carry.
Without these, nothing gets published.
Unidentified means unidentified.
Unidentified objects and sounds underwater are a real part of navy and research records. Most turn out to be ordinary once someone checks with the right instrument. Some have not been explained yet. Whether life exists beyond Earth is one of the great open questions, and it deserves the same careful evidence as everything else.
What we will do
Put them through the same five states as everything else, and publish the explained ones too.
What we will not do
Treat “unresolved” as proof of a favourite theory. An open question stays open until the evidence closes it.
The record so far
No findings of our own yet: Aethon has not run its own missions. A first scan of public depth data in Prototype 2 lists 31 places where two depth maps disagree and nothing yet explains it, and 12 rises only satellites show. Each is a reason to look again, not a finding.
